In Haitian Vodou, La Toussaint (All Saints' Day) holds great significance as a time to honor the spirits of the deceased, a celebration known as Fèt Gede. The painting depicts a Gede Seremoni, a ceremony honoring the ancestors. Central to the image are two prominent loa (spirits) associated with death and the afterlife: Baron Samedi, represented by the black cross, and Gran Brigitte (also known as Maman Brigitte), portrayed as the purple angel.
